motion capture research project

The objective of this research project was to explore 'in camera' motion capture posibilities.
With a small team of three, Rangi Sutton of Kanuka Studio, Jonathon Hutchinson and myself, we had the great opportunity to play with a GypsyGyro-18 motion capture suit. The suit was kindly loaned by VR Solutions.

The gyros are usually attached to a flexible lycra suit.  The suit was a gaudy bright yellow and black number with a great big diamond over the crutch.  As we wanted to play with the possibility of using costume I made neo preen bands to fasten the gyros to.  The bands could then be attached to the points of the body.

The technology provided many obstacles (as is usually expected). Keeping the suit calibrated was the most tedious of problems and the data required serous cleaning up.  As a result, we don't have a great deal to show in terms of motion capture, but the exercise was definitely a rewarding and educational experience for us all.
